UNCOVERING ANDROID MASTER KEY THAT MAKES 99% OF DEVICES VULNERABLE

RECENTLY discovered a vulnerability in Android’s security model that allows a hacker to modify APK code without breaking an application’s cryptographic signature, to turn any legitimate application into a malicious Trojan, completely unnoticed by the app store, the phone, or the end user. The implications are huge! This vulnerability, around at least since the release of Android 1.6 (codename: “Donut” ), could affect any Android phone released in the last 4 years1 – or nearly 900 million devices2– and depending on the type of application, a hacker can exploit the vulnerability for anything from data theft to creation of a mobile botnet.

While the risk to the individual and the enterprise is great (a malicious app can access individual data, or gain entry into an enterprise), this risk is compounded when you consider applications developed by the device manufacturers (e.g. HTC, Samsung, Motorola, LG) or third-parties that work in cooperation with the device manufacturer (e.g. Cisco with AnyConnect VPN) – that are granted special elevated privileges within Android – specifically System UID access.

Installation of a Trojan application from the device manufacturer can grant the application full access to Android system and all applications (and their data) currently installed. The application then not only has the ability to read arbitrary application data on the device (email, SMS messages, documents, etc.), retrieve all stored account & service passwords, it can essentially take over the normal functioning of the phone and control any function thereof (make arbitrary phone calls, send arbitrary SMS messages, turn on the camera, and record calls). Finally, and most unsettling, is the potential for a hacker to take advantage of the always-on, always-connected, and always-moving (therefore hard-to-detect) nature of these “zombie” mobile devices to create a botnet.

How it works:

The vulnerability involves discrepancies in how Android applications are cryptographically verified & installed, allowing for APK code modification without breaking the cryptographic signature.

All Android applications contain cryptographic signatures, which Android uses to determine if the app is legitimate and to verify that the app hasn’t been tampered with or modified. This vulnerability makes it possible to change an application’s code without affecting the cryptographic signature of the application – essentially allowing a malicious author to trick Android into believing the app is unchanged even if it has been.

Details of Android security bug 8219321 were responsibly disclosed through Bluebox Security’s close relationship with Google in February 2013. It’s up to device manufacturers to produce and release firmware updates for mobile devices (and furthermore for users to install these updates). The availability of these updates will widely vary depending upon the manufacturer and model in question.

The screenshot below demonstrates that Bluebox Security has been able to modify an Android device manufacturer’s application to the level that we now have access to any (and all) permissions on the device. In this case, we have modified the system-level software information about this device to include the name “Bluebox” in the Baseband Version string (a value normally controlled & configured by the system firmware).

Recommendations
Device owners should be extra cautious in identifying the publisher of the app they want to download.
Enterprises with BYOD implementations should use this news to prompt all users to update their devices, and to highlight the importance of keeping their devices updated.
IT should see this vulnerability as another driver to move beyond just device management to focus on deep device integrity checking and securing corporate data.

Bluebox offered the following;

“The vulnerability involves discrepancies in how Android applications are cryptographically verified & installed, allowing for APK code modification without breaking the cryptographic signature.”

They also went on to mention about how all Android apps contain a cryptographic signature and that is what Android uses to see if the app is legitimate. Or more to the point, to see if that app has been tampered with in any way. Basically, by being able to do this without breaking the signature — it would have been easy (for someone with the right knowledge) to trick Android into thinking a malicious app was perfectly harmless.

Otherwise, while Google has taken care of the Play Store, the rest of the update/fix process is up to the carriers and manufacturers. Bluebox Security has also said they will be discussing more of the technical details of this issue during Black Hat USA 2013 which runs from July 27th through August 1st.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 could arrive in September

Samsung's follow-up to the massive Note 2 may happen by September.

Are you ready for an even bigger Galaxy Note?
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is definitely one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year as it will come to continue the success of the Galaxy Note family introduced back in 2011 by the South Korean phone maker. As the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date is getting near, the rumors regarding the next-gen Sammy phablet are starting to intensify and, after we’ve heard reports about its technical specifications or design, today it’s time to talk about the launch date of the handset.

A couple of weeks ago, a Korean analyst reported that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date will be in September, so we’ve asked a couple of questions here and there, in search for a confirmation. Well, we were able to get in touch to a person close to the matter, who was capable to provide some details regarding the Galaxy Note 3 release date. Just like everybody was anticipating, he said that the Galaxy Note 3 will indeed be introduced in September, just head of IFA Berlin 2013.

He also said that, sometime in August, the South Korea-based company will announce that a special Samsung Unpacked event will be hosted on September 4th, in Berlin, adding that the Galaxy Note 3 will be officially introduced during the aforementioned press conference. The Samsung Unpacked will be a part of the IFA 2013 expo, being a press-only event, that will debut on the first day the Berlin-based tech fair will open its gates for the media.

There’s no surprise that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be introduced around the debut of IFA Berlin, as both its predecessors received the same treatment. The first Galaxy Note was officially unveiled at IFA Berlin 2011, followed next year by the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which was made public during an Unpacked event a couple of days ahead of IFA Berlin 2012 debut.

An early September release date for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is ideal for the South Korean phone maker, as the next-gen phablet will hit the market almost synchronized with iPhone 5S’ debut, which will help Samsung steal some of Apple’s customers.

A recent report was indicating that Samsung might use both Super AMOLED and IPS LCD displays for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the type of screen being market dependent, just like happens now with Samsung Galaxy S4′s processor. Talking about processor, it is speculated that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be underpinned by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC with quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 320 GPU. If you’d ask me, I would say that there will be two Galaxy Note 3 variants: one equipped with the Snapdragon 800 and another sporting Samsung’s proprietary octo-core Exynos 5 Octa SoC clocked at 1.8 GHz (200 MHz higher than the one of the Galaxy S4).

As you probably noticed, the high-end Android-powered smartphones that were introduced this year come with full HD displays (see HTC One, LG Optimus G Pro, Sony Xperia Z, and Xperia Z Ultra). Since the Galaxy Note 3 will be in Samsung’s front line of attack, the phablet will definitely come with a full HD display. Anyway, there are a lot of speculations regarding Galaxy Note 3′s screen size, some sources saying that it will be a 5.7-inch or 5.9-inch panel, while other saying that it will go past the 6-inch threshold.

We are expecting the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to borrow the 13 megapixel sensor of the Galaxy S4, and, of course, to boast all the TouchWiz Nature UX-specific Camera app features, plus S Orb, Samsung’s name for the 360 degree panorama mode. The amount of RAM and the internal storage options of the Galaxy Note 3 will also be borrowed from the Galaxy S4 flagship: 2 GB of RAM and 16/32/64 GB of storage, plus microSD card support.

Since Samsung announced the acquisition of 5% in Wacom shares, a company popular for its graphic tablets with stylus input, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 might come with an improved S Pen stylus and a couple of new S Pen-related software features. The phablet will probably come pre-loaded with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but since the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean rumors are hinting towards July release date, the Galaxy Note 3 might actually leave the factory gates with the latest Android iteration on board.

Please let us know what are you expecting from the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The comments section below is all yours.

With the absolutely beautiful ADB exploit I use, titled rageagainstthecage (ratc), absolute ALL devices can be rooted. This is because it exploit is ADB which all devices use. There is an issue though. Some devices have a NAND lock which does not allow you to write to the /system mount. Because of this, you can't copy su, sqlite or busybox to /system/bin. This creates some issues but there is a work around. For things that don't need access to /system (like enabling non-market apps) I can use the ratc exploit to make those changes. If your device cannot use su in /system/bin then you can simple select a checkbox (as of v1.5) that says to use rate.
